Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Delft, 1673-1723 Van Leeuwenhoek’s microscopes had a single lens mounted between two metal plates. The specimen was mounted on a pen that could be moved closer to or further away from the lens by turning two screws in order to bring it into focus.
