1750-1800 Dipper dredgers were used to maintained harbours and navigation channels at the correct depth. The machine was operated by manpower via a treadmill and the buckets mounted on each side shovelled up the silt and mud. This model is from the private collection of the Leiden professor Jean Allamand.
